As of 2021, India is home to approximately 89,139 animal species, of which 3,729 are classified as endangered, while approximately 48,665 plant species are known, with 5,590 classified as endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. This represents about 4.2% of the total animal species and 11.5% of the total plant species in India being endangered.
