How to Treat Parasites & Ick

If you suspect your fish has some kind of parasite, consider medications that treat a wide variety of parasitic diseases, including skin and gill flukes, anchor worm, fish lice, velvet and hole-in-the-head disease.

If your fish has white dots on its body and is darting around the tank rubbing itself against objects, it probably has Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, better known as "Ich." This is a fish parasite that can spread quickly and be deadly if not treated promptly. Ich (pronounced "ick") is a contagious parasitic infestation that affects both salt- and freshwater fish. The parasite usually only preys on fish in aquariums with poor water quality. Ich is very easy to cure, but patience is necessary.

Instructions

An isolation tank might be necessary, depending on the other fish.

Drain out 1/4 of the water from your aquarium, using the siphoning hose. Replace it with dechlorinated, same-temperature water, or slightly warmer water if your fish can handle the increase in temperature. Be careful to pour the fresh water in slowly so as not to stir up detritus on the bottom of the tank, which will further stress the sick fish.

Adjust the temperature on your tank heater to a couple of degrees higher, to around 80°F to 82°F [26.6°C to 27.7°C] over the next 24 to 48 hours. This will assist in the healing process, since the Ich parasite thrives in cooler water.

Add the required dosage of medication, which can be purchased at any pet or aquarium shop for under $10.00, at the time of publication. There are a variety of "cures" for Ich and other fish parasites, but generally malachite green or methylene blue will work well for Ich. Consult your pet shop owner for advice on general cures for fish parasites.

Follow the directions on the medicine bottle, carefully remembering to perform a 1/4-tank water change before each dose. Continue dosing for several days past the visible signs of the disease.
