How to Flush a Fish

A fish makes for a low-maintenance and pleasant family pet but sooner or later it will kick the bucket. As with any pet you will have to decide how best to dispose of the body. Many people bypass the formality of a burial and prefer to flush their deceased aquatic friend down the toilet. If this is the route you choose there are a few simple steps to keep in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the fish is dead. A prolonged upside-down floating posture is an indication of death.

    • 2

Put on a pair of sanitary gloves.

    • 3

Extract the fish from the tank using a mesh net. Carefully transfer it to a disposable cup filled with water. Avoid dropping or touching the dead fish.

    • 4

Lift the lid and seat on your toilet. Pour the dead fish into the water, trying not to splash.

    • 5

Flush the toilet. Make sure the fish doesn't resurface.

    • 6

Throw away the disposable cup. Clean and disinfect the mesh net.

    • 7

Thoroughly clean and disinfect the fish tank. If a replacement fish is on your agenda, you want to be sure that no disease or contamination threaten the new arrival.

    • 8

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water.
