How to Patch a Hole in a Pond Liner

If you notice that your pond is fading rapidly away, more than just evaporation may be afoot. A hole in your pond's liner will drain it faster than you can refill it. Once you locate the hole, you can patch the liner.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of scrap liner
  • Caulk or waterfall foam.

Instructions

First, find the hole in the liner. One way to do this is to take out any fish and let the water drain until it's below the hole. If you can't see a hole, refill the pond and pour some milk or fine sand in it -- they will follow the water to the leak. Once you find the hole, let it dry. You can sand the place to make the caulk or waterfall foam adhere better, but that's optional.

Cut the piece of scrap liner so it covers the hole with plenty extra.

    • 3

Lay the piece of scrap liner on a flat surface and cover one side completely with waterfall foam or caulk. Place it over the hole and press down as hard as you can. Remove any caulk or waterfall foam that was squeezed out. Wait 48 hours before filling up the pond again.

Check carefully for more holes at or above the water line before you refill the pond to its normal depth.
