How to Get Rid of Fin Rot in Goldfish

Knowing the right way to get rid of fin rot can make the difference between diseased, weak goldfish and healthy goldfish. Fin rot, which is a bacterial infection, is caused by grimy fish tanks, injured fins or stress. Fin rot can cause complete rotting of the fins, secondary fungal infections and death. Recognize signs of fin rot early, such as frayed, rotted fin edges, and treat your goldfish immediately by cleaning the tank and administering medication.

Instructions

  1. Clean the Aquarium

    • 1
      Remove the fish before cleaning.

Unplug the heater. Remove any decorations and filters and take them to a sink.

    • 2
An algae sponge is fluffy and absorbent.

Wipe all sides of the aquarium with an algae sponge.

    • 3

Rinse the filter and decorations with warm water.

    • 4

Wipe all sides of the aquarium with a solution that contains less than 5 percent bleach. Rinse the bleach out of the aquarium thoroughly.

    • 5

Pour water, which should be the original temperature of the aquarium, back into the tank. Add de-chlorinator and 1 tablespoon of marine or aquarium salt for each 5 gallons of water.

    • 6

Put the decorations into the aquarium, reconnect the filter and plug in the heater. Return the fish to the aquarium, and let it rest.

    • 7

Administer an antibiotic, such as tetracycline by adding one capsule of the antibiotic for each 10 gallons of water. Repeat every 24 hours for a minimum of five days.
