Why hippos float in water?

Hippos do not float in water. They are incredibly dense animals and their bodies are built for sinking and walking on the bottom of rivers and lakes. Their high bone density and thick layer of fatty tissue contribute to their semi-aquatic lifestyle, where they spend a significant amount of time submerged but do not float. In fact, despite their appearance, hippos are remarkably agile underwater and powerful swimmers when necessary.
