How to Convert an In-Ground Spa to a Fish Pond

Having a pond or water feature in your yard can be a very relaxing touch to your landscaping. If you have an old in-ground spa that is not in use and wish to turn it into a pond, the process is easier than one would think. By using the solid structure that is already in ground, you save yourself quite a bit of work such as digging and firming the soil. With a moderate budget, this project can be completed in just a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sandbags inside the spa around the edges to create different depth levels in the pond. Leave the center free of any sandbags so the depth remains adequate for fish to survive in colder months.

    • 2

Lay the liner over the spa and let it fall into the spa. It should lie over the edge onto the ground at least 1 foot. Use your hands to form the liner around the sandbags and the edges of the spa, forming the liner to the contours you created with the sandbags.

    • 3

Place the flat stones around the edges of the pond to hold the overlapped liner in place as well as provide a barrier for the pond itself.

    • 4

Fill around the stones with the fill dirt. This will help hold the stones in place once plant growth sets in.

    • 5

Fill the pond with water for completion. Check the pond for leaks by letting it sit overnight filled with water. If a leak is found it should be patched immediately.
