First, you need to find the volume of your pond. To do this, for a rectangle shaped pond, multiply the lengh times width times average deph. Multiply by 7.48 to convert it into gallons. If you have a pond that is 500 gallons or less, you need to have a pump turns over the full deph of your pond in 1 hour. If it is over 500 gallons, you need to get a pump that turns over half of the volume of the pond in an hour.

Now go shopping at a store that sells pond pumps. You can get them at Home Depot for a pretty good price. Once you find a pump that fits your needs, take it home and install the filter, the extender, and the fountain head.

Once you have the pump ready, you can add it to the pond. If you want a fountain, you should place the fountain head 1 inch above the water. If you want a bubbler, place the pump 2 inches below the water. Now all you have to do is plug it in and you're ready to go!
