Supplies for Koi Ponds

Many aqua hobbyists enjoy the challenge of building and maintaining their own outdoor koi ponds. Keeping an outdoor pond can be a very rewarding experience, but unless you are equipped with the proper knowledge and equipment you may find such an endeavor to be difficult. Equip yourself with all of the necessary pond supplies to keep your koi happy and healthy and to ensure your success in maintaining an outdoor koi pond.
  1. Filter

    • No matter what type of fish you keep and where you keep them, water quality is of vital importance. A high-quality pond filter is necessary to remove waste and debris and to facilitate biological filtration. Goldfish and koi produce a great deal of waste and require high oxygen content in pond water to survive. A pond filter helps remove the ammonia that builds up as a result of waste products, oxygenates the water and can also be used to introduce helpful bacteria into the pond environment.

    Pumps

    • Pond pumps are crucial if you hope to maintain a healthy koi pond. Pumps circulate pond water to ensure adequate water flow to prevent mosquito larvae from accumulating on the surface and to aerate the water. Pond pumps can also be used to power water features like fountains, streams and waterfalls and they are also the means by which water is pumped through the pond filter. When selecting a pond filter it is important to purchase one large enough to cycle the entire volume of water in your pond once every two hours.

    Vacuum

    • Similar to aquarium vacuums, pond vacuums are used to remove debris and waste buildup from the bottom of the pond. It is important to vacuum your pond regularly to prevent ammonia buildup that can result from an accumulation of waste, decaying plant matter and uneaten fish food. Pond vacuums can also be used to remove unwanted duckweed or algae from the surface of the water, to clean up after algae blooms and to remove dead leaves that can clog pumps and filters.

    Heater

    • Goldfish and koi are usually able to withstand temperatures much cooler than tropical fish so a pond heater is not always necessary. If, however, you live in a cooler climate or an area that experiences cold winters, you may need to invest in a pond heater to keep the temperature in your pond stable throughout the year. If you plan to keep your outdoor pond operational through the winter, you may also need to purchase an ice skimmer that will prevent ice from forming on the surface of the pond.

    Miscellaneous Supplies

    • In addition to pumps, filters and heaters there are several other simple supplies necessary for a successful pond. Pond nets may be helpful in removing leaves and debris that fall into the water and they can also be used to catch fish if you need to remove them from the pond for treatment or for some other reason. Automatic fish feeders are useful tools for pond owners who may not be available to feed their fish on a regular schedule and pond thermometers are handy tools to help you monitor temperature changes.
