Producers are organisms that can make their own food from inorganic matter. They are the first trophic level in a food chain or web. Plants are the primary producers, using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose through the process of photosynthesis.
Pond skaters are secondary consumers. They feed on insects and other small animals that live on or near the surface of the water. Pond skaters use their long legs to skim across the surface of the water, and they use their long beaks to suck up their prey.
