What is a pond blossom?

A pond blossom is a bloom of algae or cyanobacteria that can occur in bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. It is characterized by a dense growth of microscopic plants that can turn the water green, brown, or red. Pond blossoms can be caused by a variety of factors, including nutrient pollution from fertilizers, sewage, and animal waste; increased water temperatures; and changes in water pH. While some pond blossoms are harmless, others can produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals.
