How to Chain Multiple Tanks to an Air Pump in Aquariums

Running multiple aquariums often means running out of outlets. Most aquarium accessories, such as lights and heaters, can only be used for one tank at a time. However, air pumps are a pleasant exception to this rule. They can be used to run filters, air stones, bubblers and action ornaments without regard to which tank the device is in, as long as they have enough capacity. By reducing the number of air pumps in use, you not only save outlets, but also money.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the total number of gallons in the tanks that will need air pumps.

    • 2

Make a list of the type and number of devices that you will be using. In general, devices such as filters and air stones require more pressure than action ornaments and bubblers.

    • 3

Obtain an air pump that is rated for slightly more gallons than your total. If you have a lot of high-resistance devices, it is better to overestimate.

    • 4

Set up your air pump at an equal distance from the tanks to be connected, if possible.

    • 5

Run airline tubing from the pump to each device. If your air pump has multiple connections, go ahead and use those, otherwise use air regulating valves that are available from your local pet store or online.

    • 6

Turn on the air pump and tighten any loose connections. If the air pump is not putting out enough air, you will be able to tell by the low amount of bubbles coming from each device. In this case, you will need to either get a higher-rated air pump or use multiple air pumps.
