How to Install Bio Filter Pads

Effective biological filtration is essential if you are to have a healthy aquarium full of happy fish. Biological filtration breaks down fish waste and uneaten food using friendly bacteria. Those friendly bacteria colonize the bio filter pads in your power filter, providing efficient filtration and helping to keep your aquarium clean and in proper balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your power filter and remove it from the aquarium. Empty the water from the power-filter reservoir into a bucket or sink.

    • 2

Find the power filter's model number on the outside of the case. The model number typically is printed on the bottom or side of the power filter.

    • 3

Purchase a box of replacement bio filter pads designed for the power filter model you own. Remove the plastic cover from the top of the power filter.

    • 4

Remove the used bio filter pad and discard it. Insert the new bio filter pad into the power filter and push it down as far as it will go.

    • 5

Attach the power filter with the new bio filter pads to the back of the aquarium. Fill the reservoir with water until it begins to overflow back into the tank. Plug the filter into an electrical outlet and wait for the water to start flowing. Replace the top cover on the power filter.
