How to Install a Corner Filter in My Aquarium

As an aquarium hobbyist, you have many choices for filtering your tank. One of the simplest, and least expensive options is the box filter. Box filters are available for as little as $5 to $10, and they can filter a small aquarium quite efficiently. The key is to install the box filter properly and to change the filter material on a regular basis.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a suitable location for your corner filter. A back corner of the tank generally works best, since that allows you to hide the filter behind plants, rocks and other aquarium decorations.

    • 2

Purchase a box of activated charcoal and a bag of filter floss. The activated charcoal and filter floss work together to clean the water and trap dirt from the water.

    • 3

Remove the top of the corner filter and fill the bottom with activated charcoal. Fill the bottom third of the filter with the charcoal, then fill the rest with the filter floss. Place the top back on the filter.

Attach aquarium tubing to your aquarium pump. Attach the other end of the tubing to the connector on the corner filter. You might need to widen the tubing slightly to make it fit. Just insert a pencil point into the end of the tubing until the opening is large enough to accommodate the filter connection.

Place the filter in the chosen corner of your tank. Submerge the filter slowly to allow any air bubbles to dissipate as you lower it into place. Cover the base of the filter with gravel if it lifts up and starts to float.
