How to Set Up an Aquarium Box Filter

Installing a box filter is an effective yet low cost way to keep your aquarium clean and your fish healthy. The box filter connects to an aquarium pump and works by drawing water through the filter and the filter medium you insert. As the water travels through the filter, dirt and contaminants are trapped. That helps to keep the water clean and free of harmful debris.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the top of the box filter. Most box filters have tops that either snap or twist off. Set the top aside while you fill the box filter.

    • 2

Place 1 to 2 inches of activated charcoal on the bottom of the box filter. Fill the rest of the box filter with filter floss. Place the top back on the box filter and make sure it is secure.

    • 3

Attach a piece of aquarium tubing to the connection on the box filter. Attach the other end of the aquarium tubing to the connector on your aquarium pump. There should be enough tubing to allow the filter to reach the bottom of the aquarium without stretching.

Submerge the box filter in the aquarium and set it in place in one of the back corners. Push the filter back down and cover the bottom with gravel if it starts to float up.
