How to Mix Instant Ocean Sea Salt

The ocean is filled with vibrant, colorful fish, many of which are popular options as pets. Due to their environment, the fish cannot survive in fresh water, so you will need a saltwater mix to give them the proper habitat. Instant Ocean offers a number of aquarium- and fish-related products, including a sea salt mix for saltwater fish. Mixing the salt in your tank is a fairly simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your aquarium with purified water, which you can buy at a grocery store.

    • 2

Follow the package instructions and measure the salt according to how much water you have in your tank; for Instant Ocean Sea Salt, it is about 5 ounces of salt per gallon of water. Pour the salt into the water.

    • 3

Let the salt gradually mix into the water overnight using a powerhead--a submersible water pump--or an airstone, which circulates oxygen by releasing small bubbles, allowing the carbon dioxide in the aquarium water to reach equilibrium with the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and normalizing levels of pH, or acidity.
