How to Make Waves in Your Fish Tank

If you are an aquarium enthusiast or enjoy keeping fish in tanks around the house, be aware that certain species and reefs require moving water. Moving water pushes oxygen through the tank as well as prevents stagnation and algae accumulation. Special devices are made that stimulate the water in the aquarium, creating waves and movement. Placement of the devices is the key to success when making waves in a tank.

Determine your wave needs. Wave needs depend on the species in your tank, types of invertebrates or reefs and the natural activity of the species. If you are unsure of the needs of your species, consult a fish aquarium guide.

Set the electronic timer on the wave maker. Most wave makers have an electronic timer that allows custom programming for the waves. Set the times according to your aquariums needs. Many wave makers have varying speeds for wave power. Like the timing, determine the power needs based on the species in your tanks.

Place the wave makers on the bottom of the tanks. Be sure to point the wave-producing end away from reefs and invertebrate areas. The waves are generated throughout the tank; there is no need to point the working end at any reef directly.

Test the device setting by turning the timer to go off within one minute of placing it in the tank. Observe the waves and the direction they move once the device turns on. If satisfied with the power and location, take it out of the tank, set the timer again to your desired time and put back in the same position.
