Power Filters
-
Power filters are an easy, popular choice for beginner aquarists. Power filters hang on the back of the tank, sucking water and waste through a tube. The water is pushed through a filter cartridge and then released back into the tank. These filters create their own suction, so they don't require an air pump.
Internal Power Filters
-
Internal filters are similar to power filters in that they electrically power their own pump, so there is no need for an air pump. Internal power filters, however, are mounted on the inside of the tank. They create a lot of circulation, and can also be used in conjunction with other filters.
Canister Filters
-
Canister filters are generally positioned outside the tank, drawing water in and replacing water back into the tank via tubes. These tanks can filter more water at a time than internal power filters, and are therefore suited to larger tanks. Most canister filters do not require an air pump.
