    Types

    • Aquarium tests come in strip, liquid and powder forms, sold individually or as part of larger kits at pet stores, and should include detailed instructions.

    Function

    • Tests commonly look for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness in water. Ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic and nitrate may affect long-term fish health. pH measures acidity and alkalinity of the water, while hardness measures mineral content.

    Considerations

    • A recent addition to the tank or poor maintenance may cause worrisome results. Perform a large water change and re-test in a few hours. Remove any recently added decorations, and always check for decaying fish, plants and food.
