Aquarium Water Analysis

An aquarium must provide a safe, clean home for its inhabitants. Without careful monitoring and diligent maintenance, an aquarium can become dangerous for aquatic life.
  1. The Facts

    • Water contains an assortment of chemicals and minerals that may affect your fish. Water analysis tests your water for its components and serves as a useful part of aquatic husbandry.

    Benefits

    • Different fish species require different kinds of water, and some chemicals found in water can harm certain fish. Testing allows you to monitor the health of your tank and ensures that you have the right fish for the water in it.

    Types

    • Aquarium tests come in strip, liquid and powder forms, sold individually or as part of larger kits at pet stores, and should include detailed instructions.

    Function

    • Tests commonly look for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness in water. Ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic and nitrate may affect long-term fish health. pH measures acidity and alkalinity of the water, while hardness measures mineral content.

    Considerations

    • A recent addition to the tank or poor maintenance may cause worrisome results. Perform a large water change and re-test in a few hours. Remove any recently added decorations, and always check for decaying fish, plants and food.
