Things You'll Need
- Container with cover
- Soil or coconut coir
- Shredded paper
- Worms
Instructions
Poke a few small holes in the bottom of the container and put a tray under it to protect the surface it is sitting on.
Fill the container part of the way with wet soil or coconut coir. If you are using coconut coir, soak it according to the directions on the package before putting it in the container.
Soak the shredded paper overnight in water. Cardboard will also work, but will need to be soaked slightly longer than the paper.
Mix the paper in with the soil, making sure to blend in thoroughly. If the soil is dry, add a small amount of water. Let the whole thing sit overnight.
Pour the starter worms into the container with whatever bedding they came in. Red worms reproduce quickly, so the standard 1-pound cup sold at any bait shop will be enough. Keep the container uncovered so the worms can dig down into the bedding.
After the worms have had a day to settle in, begin feeding them. Start out with a small amount of fish food or cornmeal and work up to bits of fruit, cereal or vegetables. Only feed the worms a small amount a day and avoid dumping all the food in the same place.
Keep the container covered to hold in moisture. Add small amounts of water if the bedding begins to get dry.
