Artificial Aquarium Plants Vs. Live Plants

Aquarists can choose artificial or live plants when designing their tanks. Either choice can lead to a beautiful aquarium, though certain factors should be weighed before making a decision on which type of plants to use.
  1. Visual Appeal

    • Live plants lend themselves to creating an aquarium that resembles a natural setting. Artificial plants can also be used in this manner or can be combined in unique ways not occurring in nature.

    Lighting

    • Plant grow light bulbs designed for tanks with live plants are more expensive than standard aquarium bulbs. A timer will be required to ensure that the plants get the proper amount of light on a daily basis.

    Fish Interaction

    • Artificial plants cannot be damaged by fish that dig or nibble on them. Care must be taken to house fish with the proper species of live plants or the plants can be damaged or eaten.

    Water Considerations

    • Naturally decaying matter from live plants needs to be removed from the tank to avoid problems with water chemistry. This is not an issue with artificial plants.

    Unwanted Pests

    • Live plants can sometimes be home to snail eggs or other parasites that can infect your tank. Plastic or silk plants do not present this problem.
