Aquarium Heaters Information

Some aquarium fish cannot survive without a heater in the tank. Make sure you read the care for your new fish to know it's living in the proper climate. Also, always have a thermometer on your tank to reassure your tank is always at the right temperature.
  1. What Heaters Are For

    • Unlike humans, fish are cold blooded and rely on the water to maintain their body temperature. Depending on the location of your fish tank, you might not need a heater. Most tanks in the northern climate must depend on a heater because of the frigid temperatures in the winter.

    Heater Types

    • There are four types of heaters; immersible (above water), submersible (under water), substrate and filter. Immersible and submersible are tubes that let off heat and the cheapest way to go. A substrate heater is a tube that goes on the bottom that helps plant growth. The filter heater is a heating block placed into the filter that warms water as it passes through. Substrate and filter heaters are more effective as well as more expensive.

    Size

    • The size of the heater depends on the size of the tank.

To figure out the size, you first need to subtract the room temperature from what you need the aquarium temperature to be. Use the chart on the first reference to see what size heater is right for your tank. If your tank is larger or longer, it's recommended to have two heaters at each end to balance the water temperature.

    Location

    • It is incredibly important to keep the whole tank the same temperature. You should always have the heater near the water flow. Whether it's next to the filter or the power head stream, they both help push the heat through the tank faster and more efficiently. If you have more than one heater, it's best to have one by each.

    Availability

    • Heaters can be found at your local pet store. If you can't find the one you are looking for, check online.
