DIY Corner Fish Tank Stand

Corner fish tanks are very attractive and unique pieces of furniture and pet environments. These tanks are typically triangular in shape, although they can also be other shapes. Finding the appropriate fish tank stand can be rather difficul, so many fish hobbyist build their own corner fish tank stands. While these corner fish tank stands can be difficult to make, they can be very beautiful and customized to meet the needs of the owner.

  1. Supplies Needed

    • There are many supplies needed to make a corner fish tank stand. These supplies include a circular saw and a jig saw, tape measure, pencil, hammer, drill, carpenter square, rasp, sand paper, paint brush and clamp. In addition to the tools, wood is needed. Number two 2 x 4's are needed as a frame for the corner fish tank stand. Plywood or sheet wood is used to cover the stand and to create shelves if desired. Stain is used to keep the wood protected and looking good.

    Designing the Stand

    • The corner fish tank stand should be only slightly larger than the fish tank itself. The stand should also be the same shape as the fish stand to allow the support beams to hold the tank by the heaviest part, the standing glass. A shelf can be placed in the corner fish tank stand to hold the supplies with a hinged door to hide the shelf.

    Building a Corner Fish Tank Stand

    • Once a design is decided upon, building the tank stand can begin. Start out by building the supports to the stand. Be sure to measure each piece and mark the cuts with a pencil using the carpenter's square to ensure a straight line and cut. Use nails and screws rather than glue to hold the tank stand together, due to the weight of the tank when filled with water. The shelf should be put into the stand before the sheet wood is placed on the supports. The top of the stand should be made of a very strong plywood or several pieces of plywood due to the weight of the tank. Sheet wood can be either nailed or glued onto the supports to create an attractive piece of furniture. Once the stand is built, it can be stained or painted to match the decor of the room or to complement the tank decor or colors.
