How to Make a Refugium Out of a 10 Gallon Fish Tank

A saltwater aquarium can be a rewarding and fascinating hobby. Collectors soon realize that the ecosystem they have created is as complicated and varied as the ocean itself. In the quest to reproduce a natural environment, it may be necessary to create micro-environments for delicate or timid species. For a saltwater aquarium, a refugium is the ideal solution.
A refugium is a smaller aquarium attached to the main aquarium that shares a water source and conditions, but keeps selected species away from predators in a protected environment. You can build your own refugium out of a 10-gallon aquarium.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your main tank for the addition of the refugium. You may need a larger or more secure stand to accommodate the extra size and weight.

    • 2

Place the 10-gallon aquarium stand adjacent to the main aquarium. The 10-gallon aquarium should sit flush against the other aquarium with the tops of both being even.

    • 3

If you feel the refugium needs to be more secure, affix it to the main aquarium with the silicone sealer. However, this makes it a permanent fixture, so consider how you will manage cleaning and maintenance carefully before you decide on this option.

    • 4

Install the sump pump according to the manufacturer's directions. The water should come from well below the surface to provide the best quality water for the refugium. Water from the surface of the main tank will have less oxygen and more contaminants. The temperature from deeper water will be optimum as well.

    • 5

Place the sand and rocks into the refugium, creating hiding places for the fish.

    • 6

Place the light and cover on top of the refugium. If you have jumping fish in the refugium, make sure the cover is tightly sealed.
