Use the filter mesh for a small pump. Pull off the top of the pump and cut the mesh into a thin strip large enough to fit tight. Fold it in half and place it in the pump. Replace the top of the pump, place it in the water and plug it in.

Us a charcoal bag in addition to the filter mesh for larger filters, where the water pours out over the top of the pump. Place the charcoal bag and the filter in the top of the pump, and use the plastic clips to suspend the filter and charcoal bag.

Pour enough water in the pump to fill it to the top. The pump should be hanging off the edge of the tank, at the top of the water level. The plastic tube portion of the pump should be 3/4 in the water in order to draw the water up into the filter. The tube is attached to the front corner of the pump, and should face in toward the water, not touching the tank glass.

Plug the pump in and the water should begin pouring over the edge of the pump.
