Look in thrift stores and second-hand shops for used aquariums. These can often be found in these kinds of stores for extremely low prices. Check out the overall condition of the glass before you buy it. If the corners don't look as if they are sealed properly, that can be fixed later. A crack in the glass, however, can't safely be fixed.
Read the local classifieds. The local newspaper may have used aquariums up for sale. If you have a local version of the Thrifty Nickel, Penny Pincher or other classified paper franchise, check it for aquarium listings. When you buy a used aquarium from an individual, you may be able to haggle the price down from the asking price, resulting in an even lower price.
Go online to find a used aquarium. Check the local Craigslist ads as well as eBay for an aquarium that is close by enough to pick up. It is often not practical to ship an aquarium because the costs of postage will generally far exceed the amount you save by buying the aquarium used. You may be able to find a free one by signing up at Free Cycle and getting emails when local items are offered for free.
Check the aquarium for any problems with the seal. If the seals seem as if they have any loose areas or places with missing sealant, this can be easily fixed. Many aquarium shops and pet stores carry silicone sealant that is safe for use in aquariums. Follow the package directions to fix any areas that may not have a rigid seal. This will ensure that a small problem doesn't become a larger one when the aquarium begins leaking.
