What Are Neon Swordtails?

Neon swordtails are medium-sized aquarium fish that originate from the region of Central America that extends from Mexico to Guatemala. They can live up to four years when taken care of properly. They thrive in brackish aquarium water, though they can also be placed in freshwater if needed. They are active swimmers who need plenty of room. Though not truly a tropical fish, they do best in water kept from 64.4 to 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
  1. Physical Features

    • Neon Swordtails are named as such because of two distinguishable characteristics. One is the pronounced extension on the lower part of the tail of male Swordtails that resembles a sword. The other is the neon-colored bands found across the length of the body on males and females. Females look huskier than males and grow to around 4 1/2 inches long. The males top out at 4 inches. Swordtails have upturned mouths due to being "top" feeders, and come in a variety of colors. These can include red, black, green, and white (or albino).

    Temperament

    • Normally a mellow species of fish, the Neon Swordtail can live amongst other peaceful aquarium fish without too many problems. The males can become aggressive over their territory, especially during mating periods. They should be housed with other male Neon Swordtails with caution.

    Diet

    • Neon Swordtails need to eat both plant and animal items to maintain optimum health. In the wild, they will eat algae, vegetable matter, small crustaceans, mosquito larvae, worms, and other small insects. In an aquarium, they can eat cooked peas, lettuce and spinach, flaked fish foods, and frozen or freeze-dried blood worms or brine shrimp.

    Breeding

    • Neon Swordtails are live-bearing fish, which means the female gives birth to the babies (called "fry") instead of laying eggs. She can have from 28 to 80 young at a time depending on the size of the female. She can also store up to six batches of sperm after mating just once. She can continue to give birth every 30 days until this stored supply is exhausted. The fry need to be separated from the parents as soon as possible as the adults will eat their young.
