How to Know if a Tiger Fish Is Breeding

Tiger fish are more commonly known as tiger barbs and Sumatra barbs. They are a popular freshwater aquarium fish, with silvery sides, vivid orange fins and four vertical stripes across their body. They are easily bred by placing the males and females together in a tank with slightly soft water and a slightly acidic pH. Knowing when a breeding has taken place allows you to remove the parents from the tank, as tiger barbs tend to eat their own eggs and fry.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay near the breeding tank after the tiger barbs are placed together. Breeding usually takes place within a few hours of the fish being brought together, if not sooner.

    • 2

Watch the male tiger barbs. During the beginning of the process, they chase the female fish around the tank.

    • 3

Inspect the female fish. When they are getting ready to spawn, they fatten up, acquiring a rounded shape to their short bodies.

    • 4

Watch for the females to release their eggs. Females lay their eggs in sheltered spots around rocks and plants.

    • 5

Wait for the males to leave a spray of sperm over the place where the females lay their eggs.
