How to Feed a Guppy

Guppies are tolerant tropical fish. They are omnivores and will survive on a range of diets, but they do best on high quality algae-based fish food supplemented with occasional live or frozen food. A good diet also intensifies the colors of their fins and tails.

Instructions

    • 1

Crumble a pinch of the dried food between your fingers and sprinkle the food in the tank two or three times a day. A rough guide is to feed no more than the guppies can eat within three to five minutes. Start with a tiny pinch and add more food as required.

    • 2

Insert live food such as daphnia or brine shrimp to the tank once or twice a week. Frozen food is an acceptable alternative. The portion of live food should be slightly larger than the portion of dried food.

    • 3

Feed newly hatched brine shrimp or commercial fry food to any guppy fry (babies) three to five times a day. Feed the fry mostly live food for the first few weeks. The fry can also eat finely crumbled dried food.
