Instructions
Observe the fish as they swim in the aquarium. Watch for turning on their sides, rubbing on the bottom, gasping at the top of the water and gathering at the flow of water from the filter. These are behavioral symptoms of fish disease, often caused by water quality or parasites.
Look for physical signs of parasites, raised scales, swollen areas including the eyes and ragged fins or tails. A parasite, commonly called ich, seen as white specks on the body, is the most common parasite encountered in aquarium fishes. Detect fin and tail rot by seeing ragged edges and pieces missing of the tail and fins. Other bacteria-related fish diseases mimic this, but improving the quality of the water is helpful in treating all fish diseases.
Check for signs of fungus or other growths on the fish. Fungus appears as cottonlike spots on the mouth or anywhere on the body of the fish. Check for bloody streaks or discoloration on the body. Become familiar with healthy fish appearance and behavior; this helps detection of fish diseases for beginning aquarium enthusiasts.
Keep high water quality, which enables fish to fend off many diseases and parasites. Partial water changes with dechlorinated water and proper filtration help ensure fish health. Proper temperatures without fluctuation and minimal stress also promote good fish health.
Visit a local aquarium supply store. Veterinarians for fish are rarely available, and most diseases can be helped with fish medications bought at aquarium supply stores.
