How to Breed Bullhead Fish

Bullhead fish are mostly used as bait by fishermen, but they can also be bred at home and kept as pets. Since these fish multiply quickly, it's best to limit the number of fish you keep in the tank. Purchasing multiple tanks or keeping males and females separate is a good idea when you only want to care for a certain number of fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a 10-gallon fish tank. This tank will safely hold up to 6 adult bullhead fish and their young. Fill the tank with water that's at room temperature. Bullhead fish prefer to live in water that's around 70 degrees F. This temperature is best when breeding.

    • 2

Add rocks, plants and other elements to create an exciting atmosphere for the fish. Make sure there's enough hiding room for each fish. During breeding, males will hide eggs underneath any available surface. They will guard this surface until their young are born.

    • 3

Add bullhead fish to the fish tank. Include at least two males to induce breeding. Bullhead fish are capable of breeding at 6 months of age.

    • 4

Feed fish daily to encourage socialization and breeding among the fish. Feed fish brine, fish flakes, mosquito larvae and algae. You can find a variety of fish food and other products at most pet stores.

    • 5

Monitor the fish to make sure they are comfortable. Bullhead fish eggs will hatch in about 5 days after fertilization. Frys (young fish) can be found at the bottom of the fish tank. Encourage proper eating habits by continuing to feed fish daily.
