Instructions
Provide the proper water conditions in you aquarium to encourage Kenyi cichlids to breed. Because this species comes from lakes that contain a lot of rocks and minerals, they thrive in hard water. The pH balance should be 7.8 to 8.6, and the temperature of the water should be kept between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Monitor the water on a regular basis to check for changes that could harm Kenyi cichlids or slow down their mating process.
Use a substrate of sand or gravel on the floor of your aquarium. This will make the tank resemble the natural environment of the Kenyi cichlid, making them more relaxed in their environment. Feeling relaxed will encourage breeding.
Place rocks, coral or other aquarium approved decor in your tank to provide hiding placing for your Kenyi cichlids. All cichlids like to hide, and breeding females will seek cover as they prepare to lay their eggs.
Purchase one male and at least four female Kenyi cichlids for your aquarium. More than one male can result in aggressive behavior as the fish breed.
Feed your breeding Kenyi cichlids a nutritious diet. Food labeled specifically for cichlids will provide the necessary nutrients these fish need to breed. Supplement their diets with live feeder fish, bloodworms and brine shrimp. Feed your Kenyi cichlids two or three times each day.
Observe your Kenyi cichlids to check for signs that breeding has occurred. The females are mouth brooders, which means they will carry their eggs in their mouths until the offspring have hatched. This process will take approximately 30 days. During this time, the females will eat less and have an enlarged appearance to their mouth areas.
Consider transferring the baby fish to another tank until they are grown. Adult Kenyi cichlids, especially males, might eat their young.
