Check the pH of your water regularly by purchasing a pH test kit. These kits will contain strips that you can dip into a sampling of the water to measure the pH. Some freshwater shrimp prefer highly alkaline water, and some prefer softer water. A good starting pH is 7.0 but you should maintain the proper pH for your species.

    • 2

Change at least one third of the water every two weeks to keep the water clean for your shrimp. Remove the water from the surface of the tank and replace with water adjusted for pH. Do not vacuum the bottom of the tank, as some shrimp feed off the waste that settles.

    • 3

Feed your shrimp pellets or flake food, but only as much as they can eat in a few minutes. Begin with a pinch the size of your fingernail and adjust accordingly.

    • 4

Keep only shrimp in your aquarium. Introducing other fish can cause an unsafe environment for your shrimp, as many aquarium fish are predatory.
