Where do Atlantic salmon live?

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are anadromous fish—meaning they are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean, and then return to freshwater to spawn. They are native to the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent rivers in Europe, North America, and Russia.

In Europe, Atlantic salmon are found in the British Isles, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Iceland.

In North America, Atlantic salmon are found in Canada and the United States. In Canada, they are found in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. In the United States, they are found in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania.

In Russia, Atlantic salmon are found in the Kola Peninsula and the White Sea basin.

The largest populations of Atlantic salmon are found in Norway, Scotland, and Canada.
