What water depth does a puffer fish live in?

Pufferfish can be found in a variety of water depths, depending on the species. Some species, such as the northern puffer (Sphoeroides maculatus), live in shallow waters near the shore, while others, such as the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), live in deep waters far from land.

In general, pufferfish are found in tropical and subtropical waters in warm shallows of coastal reefs but some are found from near-shore shallows to waters about 300 ft. deep. Most live along continental shelves around islands or along continental shelves. Pufferfish have also been known to enter saltwater bays, brackish water environments such as river deltas and mangroves.
