How well does sound travel through water?

Sound travels approximately 4.3 times faster in water than in the air. The speed of sound in water at room temperature is approximately 1,482 metres per second (4,860 feet per second), while the speed of sound in the air at room temperature is approximately 343 metres per second (1,125 feet per second). This means that sound waves can travel through water over four times as quickly as they can through air.
