1. They're not actually ugly: While the blob fish's appearance is often described as "ugly," this is due to the way they are photographed. Their gelatinous bodies are designed for deep-sea life, but when brought to the surface, the pressure change causes them to deform and become "blobby". In their natural habitat, they are actually quite sleek.
2. They don't actively hunt: Blob fish are passive ambush predators. They lie on the seafloor, waiting for prey to come to them. They primarily eat crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans.
3. They are masters of buoyancy: Blob fish have a lower density than water, which allows them to float effortlessly. This is due to their gelatinous body and their ability to control the amount of gas in their swim bladders.
4. They are highly endangered: Deep-sea trawling, which targets other species, is the main threat to blob fish populations. Their slow reproduction rate and the fact that they live in a very specific habitat also contribute to their vulnerability.
5. They are the official "Ugliest Animal": In 2013, the blob fish was voted the world's ugliest animal in a contest run by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. This title was meant to raise awareness about the importance of protecting even "unattractive" species.
