How to Remove Chemicals From the Water for a Goldfish Tank

Water from a domestic supply contains chemicals harmful to fish. Municipal water companies add disinfectants and other trace elements to improve water quality for humans, but these are not suitable for fish. A water dechlorinator that removes a broad spectrum of chemicals will neutralize your water, turning your tank into a safe environment for your goldfish.

Instructions

Choose a dechlorinating water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals. Most of the brands you see in a pet store essentially do the same job but vary greatly in price. If you don't know which one is best for your particular needs, a sales assistant should be able to advise you. Water conditioners formulated for one goldfish in a small tank are the cheapest option, and they do the job just as well as some of the more expensive solutions.

Mix the water and dechlorinator together in a bucket, following the manufacturer's instructions for the correct dosage. Do not pour the dechlorinator directly into the goldfish tank.

    • 3

Let the water settle if the instructions tell you to do this. Most dechlorinators work immediately, but some require you to let the solution work for up to an hour.

Pour the neutralized water into the goldfish tank and add your fish.
