How to care for freshwater Goldfish

Goldfish are low-maintenance pets. Unlike dogs or cats, they don't require regular exercise or attention but they do need to a clean home and regular feedings. If properly attended to, the hardy goldfish can live a long, healthy life of up to 15 years.

Set up the aquarium according to the manufacturer's directions. While goldfish are able to survive in a basic bowl, they will live a longer, healthier lives in a properly aerated aquarium. Place the aquarium in a low-traffic, quiet area out of direct sunlight.

Keep your water temperature between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Monitor the thermometer on a daily basis to make sure the water never rises above 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Goldfish are cold water fish and high temperatures can be dangerous for them.

Feed your fish once a day. Purchase a flake fish food from you local pet supply store. A pinch of fish food each day is enough for one fish. Do not overfeed your pet as excess food will pollute the tank and bloat the fish.

Change the water and clean the tank once a week. Place your fish in a temporary bowl while you freshen the water and scrub down the tank. This helps to remove algae, dirt and bacteria that may be polluting the tank water. Don't forget to clean the filters, tubes and gravel in the process.

Fill the tank with hiding places and plant life. An empty aquarium can be stressful and strange to a fish so give them places to tuck into and hide behind. Find plastic plants, treasure chests, ships and other aquarium decorations at a pet store.
