How to Raise Jumbo Goldfish

Goldfish, or Carassius auratus auratus, descend from the Crucian Carp, which comes from China. Typically they are small fish, just a few inches, living in small tanks no bigger than 25 gallons. However, in 2008 the BBC found a 15-year-old goldfish that was 1-foot 3-inches long and over 21 pounds. When he was first purchased, his owner said he was just an inch long. To raise your own jumbo goldfish, remove it from a small tank and place it into a large pond.

Instructions

Add pond water fish treatment solution to your 10-foot wide pond before you add any fish. This clears the water of any chemicals such as chlorine that will kill the fish. Test the pond with pH strips to check the pH balance. For goldfish it should be between 6.0 to 8.0.

Place your small goldfish into the freshwater pond. Do not put too many in because it will create lots of waste which will cause too much algae to grow. This will kill the goldfish. You want two or three goldfish to grow them into jumbo sized ones.

Check the temperature of the pond with a thermometer. It should be approximately 40 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Goldfish prefer colder temperatures but they should survive in warmer waters. However if it is too hot, they will not live. You want to give them optimal living conditions so they grow jumbo sized.

Install a pond pump in your pond to be sure there is good circulation and plenty of oxygen for your goldfish. During summer months, be sure the pump is on to prevent too much algae growth. Plant water plants such as water lettuce and sedges to give your fish shade and increase oxygen in the water.

Feed your goldfish with pellets designed for pond goldfish. Only feed them enough food that they can eat in 5 minutes. Otherwise the food will make the water dirty and it is wasteful.
