How to Test the Nitrate of the Goldfish Tank

Although goldfish are relatively hardy, they still need the right conditions to be healthy. A high nitrate level in any aquarium is problematic. It leads to algal blooms and can cause physical problems for the fish. A very high nitrate level is dangerous and potentially fatal to goldfish. Regular partial water changes should keep nitrates under control. It is worth conducting occasional tests to ensure that the nitrate level is close to zero, especially if you have a well-stocked tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a nitrate test kit. Because the owners of more fragile fish, or marine tanks, have to conduct regular tests, one test pack should be enough for several dozen tests.

    • 2

Fill up a test tube with tank water as per the instructions. Conduct the test before the weekly water change.

    • 3

Add the test solution. Cover and shake the test tube.

    • 4

Compare the color to the test kit chart to get a nitrate reading. Anything higher than 40 parts per million is dangerously high. Increase the frequency or quantity of water changes and test again after a week. Nitrate levels ideally should be less than 10 ppm, and no more than 20 ppm.
