Why is the cookie cutter shark called cutter?
The name "cookie cutter shark" comes from the distinct bite wounds it leaves on its prey, which resemble those made by a cookie cutter. These sharks do not actively cut pieces of prey. Rather, they take circular "cookie bites" out of larger fish and invertebrates with their upper row of serrated teeth while leaving them mostly intact. While these bites look severe, and have even resulted in human injury, they generally are not fatal to shark prey.
