How to Lubricate Ball Valves on Koi Ponds

Koi ponds require filters and pumps to remain habitable. In some pond set-ups, pumps are required to be at different heights than the main pond. In these situations, a ball or check-valve is required to prevent back-flow. Back-flow can cause pumps to run dry, which can lead to pump damage or even an electrical fire. Fortunately, ball valves are cheap and easily installed. Sometimes they require lubrication, and when they do, care must be taken to avoid damaging the pond.

Things You'll Need

  • Silicone lubricant
  • Silicone applicator
  • PVC check-valve
  • PVC connections to the pump and pond
  • Aquarium glue (marine silicone)

Instructions

    • 1

Apply lubricant to the inside of the ball valve on both openings. Allow several minutes for the lubricant to dry. Silicone lubricants have to dry before working.

    • 2

Slide ball valve into place. It should easily glide over the PVC pipes. Make certain it is facing the right way as these valves only work correctly in one direction.

    • 3

Glue the valve in place with aquarium glue. Normally, PVC cement would be used, but PVC cement must be applied inside the fittings - where it would interfere with the lubricant. Apply the clear glue around the outside of the joint, then wiggle the fittings to get the lubricant into the joint.

Allow the glue to dry per the manufacturer's instructions. This typically takes 24 to 48 hours.
