How to Install Koi Pond Leaf Netting

Late fall is koi pond maintenance time. Proper preparation for winter is essential if you plan to leave fish in the pond. The installation of leaf netting is one of the most important elements of fall maintenance because it keeps dead leaves from clogging the pond, rotting and harmfully altering the ecosystem. It also keeps predators such as raccoons and herons from fishing in the pond.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the size of the koi pond. This determines the size of the netting. Buy netting larger than the pond to give you excess to work with.

    • 2

Drive metal rods into the ground at even points around the circumference of the koi pond. Some pond leaf netting kits come with these rods. If yours doesn't, use any rod long enough to stand securely in the ground and allow you to attach netting to it. If you have sandy soil, sink the rods in concrete and leave only the top portion visible.

    • 3

Lay lengths of PVC pipe across the surface of the koi pond. The number of lengths and their measurements depends on the size of the pond. Use at least two lengths of pipe. Let them float on top of the pond.

    • 4

Stretch the leaf netting over the koi pond and secure it to each of the sunken rods. The leaf netting rests on the floating PVC rather than on top of the pond so the net remains dry. The leaves and debris it collects remains dry for easier clean up and the fish don't have to worry about getting caught in it.
