How to Decorate a Koi Pond

Koi ponds contain more than the colorful domestic version of carp. They add tranquility and elegance to many backyards, courtyards and other outdoor meeting places. Many koi ponds are elaborate settings that include waterfalls, lights and ornaments. A beautiful and well-designed koi pond can turn any back yard into an oasis.

Instructions

    • 1

Shop for fancy, vibrant stones to decorate the pond. Stones of different shapes, sizes and colors are available from home and garden centers and specialty websites and aquarium stores (see Resources below). Some companies sell stones with peaceful and positive sayings and words printed on them.

    • 2

Bring home plants from aquarium or garden supply stores. Water lilies and water hyacinth are good choices. Remember to keep your koi well-fed with plants and vegetation from other sources so they won't eat all the plants in their pond. Koi don't eat salvinia (water velvet), so if you have the time to landscape your pond, this plant is another option because it will stay around for awhile.

    • 3

Buy glass floats or other ornaments to decorate if you desire something different for your koi pond. Glass floats sculpted by artists add a delicate touch to your koi pond. Add small marbles and ceramic sculptures for a classy look. If you want to create a more festive atmosphere, try a funny rubber duck or cartoon character toys and floats.

Install a waterfall or fountain as part of your koi pond. A waterfall does more than beautify your pond. It ventilates the pond and supplies much-needed air to keep koi and plants healthy.

    • 5

Landscape the area around your koi pond with shrubs, flowers and other plants. If you have enough space in your yard, consider a stone path that leads to the koi pond.

    • 6

Decorate your koi pond with floating, colored LED rings. Other lighting alternatives include submersible spotlights and egg-shaped lights. You can buy some of these products inexpensively from eBay auctions.
