What does a kookaburra sound like?
Kookaburras produce a laughing call for territorial and contact reasons, and in response to storms. The best known vocalisation of the kookaburra is the loud "laughing" call, which consists of a series of high-pitched, raucous notes that sound similar to human laughter. Each bird in a group gives a variable number of "ha-ha-ha" notes before pausing for the next bird in the group to start, thus giving a "laughing" chorus with a rhythm of about five calls per second. The purpose of the laughing call is to inform neighbouring kookaburras that the territory is currently occupied and to re-establish territory after disturbances such as storms or bushfires.
