While the Perso-Arabic script has been used for over a thousand years by Sindhis, it is not a Sindhi script originally or inherently and lacks various phonetic equivalents necessary for precise orthographic rendering of the phonology of the language. For instance, the sound represented by the letter <ل> in Perso-Arabic is not part of the native phonology of Sindhi, yet the letter is still employed to represent sounds close to it.
The creator of Marulipi, Rajeev Sindhi, claims the script is both phonetic and easy to learn. He designed it to be free from the shortcomings of the Perso-Arabic script, making it more suited to the sound system and phonology of the Sindhi language.
Since the Perso-Arabic script has a large body of literature and enjoys cultural and religious reverence among the Sindhi-speaking population, the feasibility and adoption potential of Marulipi remains a subject of debate and discussion.
