What type of sharks can live in fresh water as well salt water?

There is only one known species of shark that can live in both freshwater and saltwater: the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas).

While other sharks may occasionally venture into freshwater rivers and estuaries, the bull shark is unique in its ability to tolerate a wide range of salinity levels.

Here's why:

* Physiological Adaptations: Bull sharks have specialized kidneys that allow them to regulate salt levels in their bodies, adapting to both freshwater and saltwater environments.

* Behavior: They are known to travel far upriver, sometimes hundreds of miles from the ocean. They are found in rivers across the world, including the Amazon, the Mississippi, and the Ganges.

However, it's important to note that:

* Most sharks are strictly saltwater creatures. They cannot survive in freshwater environments for extended periods.

* Bull sharks are still primarily saltwater sharks. They need to return to the ocean to reproduce.

* Freshwater environments can be stressful for bull sharks. They can experience health problems and even death if they stay in freshwater for too long.

So, while the bull shark is the only known shark that can live in both freshwater and saltwater, it's not a true freshwater shark. It's a remarkable adaptation that allows them to exploit diverse habitats, but they still require the ocean for survival.
