Here's why:
* Food: Swordfish are apex predators and primarily feed on squid, fish, and crustaceans. Their preferred prey often resides in the upper layers of the ocean, making it more efficient for them to hunt there.
* Warm temperatures: Swordfish are warm-blooded animals, and they prefer warmer waters. While they can tolerate colder temperatures, the upper layers are generally warmer.
* Sunlight: Swordfish are visually-oriented predators and rely on their excellent eyesight to hunt. They can still see in dim light, but the upper layers of the ocean offer better visibility.
So while they might dive deep occasionally to hunt or escape danger, swordfish generally prefer to live and hunt in the upper layers of the ocean.
