How to Place a Sea Sponge in a Marine Tank

There are many benefits of placing sea sponges in marine and reef tanks. Sponges look attractive and can become part of your tank's ecosystem. This is because the sea sponges are nature's filter feeders, which means that they will aid in keeping the tank clean by consuming the organic waste. Sea sponges are quite easy to re-home. This is because they are not extremely sensitive to changes in climate. However, they are not well equipped to cope with drastic changes in salt levels. Therefore it is important to follow some guidelines to help your new sea sponge adapt well to your marine tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the sea sponge into one of the buckets in the bag it was supplied in. Do not take it out of the bag during the whole process.

    • 2

Fill up the other bucket with saltwater from your marine tank using the jug.

    • 3

Pour some of the saltwater into the bag containing the sea sponge, using the jug. The amount should be roughly one quarter the amount of water which is already in the bag.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 every 10 minutes for the next hour. This helps the sea sponge to slowly adapt to the new salt levels in which it will be living.

    • 5

Place the bag containing the sea sponge into the tank, making sure that it is fully submerged.

    • 6

Take the sea sponge out of the bag, still keeping it fully submerged, and place in your desired location in the tank.
